LAPS:

Feral Colony Cats

ferals currently being socialized at/through LAPS as of 2016-01-29 - Tellar, Eaton, and Rio

Note: Tellar is temporarily residing with Foster Mom Jules so that he can get used to being in a home environment. Eaton and Rio are still together at the shelter.

Tellar

  • Foster Mom Jules had a Periscope with Tellar again today.

Rio and Eaton

  • Kayla had a Periscope with Eaton and Rio today. Both cats are very nervous today, and they think it’s because their room was thoroughly cleaned today, which would have been disturbing and served to get rid of almost everything with a familiar scent.
  • They also posted some pictures of both cats.

Star Wars Litter

LAPS staff and volunteers have been easing up on posting videos of the kittens as we head towards adoption day, but you can go to http://livestream.com/accounts/14083503/starwars to watch the Livestream of this litter live. (Note: It’s not always easy to tell what day a video is from — Livestream uses relative time, i.e. “xx days ago”, for posts and Zulu Time, which is currently eight hours ahead of PST, for comments — but they are in reverse chronological order on the page.)

  • All of the kittens have found their forever homes (per yesterday’s cupcake birthday party video).
  • I didn’t hear the news myself (Jayne apparently announced it on the Livestream today), but it appears that Queen Amidala has also found her forever home and will be heading there next week.

The cams and Livestream feeds

On Thursday, February 4, Shelly set up a new Livestream event for the Feral Recovery Room. This was so that she could set up a new cam on Noelle and Elf downstairs at TKHQ.

So we now have three live streaming webcams at TKHQ. The various room cams (currently the feral recovery room, the romper room, and NoElf’s room) get swapped around among the three feeds so at any given point, you really have to check the feed to see what room it’s showing:

The feeds were being swapped around quite frequently today. There was also a power failure at TKHQ later today, so all of the cams were down for the evening except for NoElf’s.

  • In the morning: No VIP feed, no NoElf cams. Romper room and feral recovery room both on regular feeds.
  • Around 1:30/2 PM: VIP feed back up and on feral recovery room cam; romper room feed was on NoElf (which was back up); feral recovery room feed was on romper room.
  • Around 3 PM: VIP feed back on romper room; feral recovery room feed on feral recovery room; romper room feed on NoElf.
  • Around 5 PM: Feral recovery room and VIP streams down. NoElf cams still working on romper room feed. (Apparently, the power went out at TKHQ due to high winds. There’s a battery backup downstairs, which I assume is why NoElf’s cams didn’t go down.)
  • Around 9:45 PM: All feeds working again. VIP feed on romper room; feral recovery room feed on feral recovery room; romper room feed on NoElf.

General Notes

  • Willow Sarin’s human posted some lovely feral colony pictures that she’d used for her digital photography assignment. (The pictures are from about three weeks ago.)

Feral Recovery Ward

Current residents:

ferals currently recuperating at TKHQ 2016-01-27 - Satine, Enara, and Tiger
  • The Visits:
    • Shelly visited in the morning.
      • She brought more food and water.
      • She’s still having technical difficulties with the NoElf cams so presumably that’s what is set to VIP since the other two rooms are not on VIP.
      • She gave Satine her eye drops — she seems less nasally congested but her left eye looks really sore; her mouth and gums look good, though. (She was very good about being poked and prodded.) Shelly says Satine is on the edge regarding whether or not she’ll return to the colony. (She still has some time while she recovers from the URI, but she seems to have plateaued in her socialization.) Satine’s eye looks worse than Holly’s had so Shelly took a picture to send to Dr. Ferguson. The URI thing that is rampant at the colony seems to frequently lead to eye ulcers that left untreated will result in a useless eye. Holly’s eye took almost 14 days to clear up.
      • Tiger will be neutered next Friday. He’s FIV/FeLV negative. (Someone on chat apparently called him Buff Daddy during this visit, which I think is hilarious.)
      • Still no applications for any of the ferals — the lack of applications highlights the problems with finding homes for formerly feral cats. Calling them “feral” may turn some people off, but Shelly doesn’t want to stop doing that because she wants to lessen the stigma and raise awareness rather than hiding their origins away.
    • Gwen visited to do a major cleaning of the room. (Satine stayed up on the window sill but Tiger was placed in a closed crate and Enara was placed in her favourite crate, which was turned towards the wall because it has no door.) The VIP stream was turned back on, showing this room’s cam, at this point in time (shortly after 2PM) and the feral room feed was showing the romper room cam.

Formerly-Feral Mega Romper Room

This is the room where Comet, Mistletoe, Jingle, and Nicholas are currently residing until they head to their forever homes. It’s frequently the room that is viewable only on the VIP stream but for at least part of today, it was on regular stream.

  • The Visits:
    • Shelly stopped in quickly in the morning to drop off fresh food (The cam was on its proper, regular feed at this point, not VIP, because the NoElf cams were still down.)

      • She also opened up the catio window and brought in the new Kuranda tower so that they can easily reach the window and catio now. (Some really noisy sewer pump going on, which seems to be freaking out the kittens a bit and ruining a good catio day.)
      • She straightened up the camera that had been tilted since yesterday and cleaned all three camera lenses. She mentioned that she spend 3.5 hours last night trying to get the downstairs set up working again but no dice.
      • They’re going to do one more round of PCRs next week to make sure. If negative, everyone will finally be able to go to their (very patient) forever homes.
    • Alicia visited in the afternoon. At this point, this room was back on the VIP feed (so no video to upload).

NoElf Room

This is the room downstairs where Noelle and Elf are currently residing, on their own while Noelle’s ringworm status is still positive.

  • The cams in this room were down until early afternoon, at which point the romper room feed was on this room and the actual romper room was back on VIP.
  • Today is ringworm bath day.
  • The Visits:
    • Shelly visited in the early afternoon, after their ringworm baths. She thinks that water got into the cam cables last night when the girls went swimming in their water bowls. [Hmm…At one point during yesterday’s visits, the girls were near the door, where the cam and their water bowls were, and Elf kept looking up at the ceiling and then at the floor, and both girls were picking their way gingerly around things like their feet were getting wet. The impression I got as a distant spectator was that there was a minor leak in the ceiling, which wouldn’t be a first in that house or even in that basement. And it’s been pretty rainy.] This is a different, brand new cam — she doesn’t know if the other one just needs to dry out or what. The food and water are now in the opposite corner of the room. Noelle’s floof is coming in white in places, like Cassidy’s did when he’d been so sick. (Fever coat, possibly.)
    • Alicia visited
